About The Artwork

This is a painting of the night sky as felt from the inside — a vast, shimmering field in which gold ignites against deep cobalt and violet, the whole surface trembling with a light that seems to come not from above but from within.

Working across a generous 42 × 36 inch canvas, Ram Bali Prajapati lays down thousands of individual marks with extraordinary patience and precision. Dots of cobalt, indigo, periwinkle, slate and charcoal form the atmospheric ground, while veins and clusters of saffron and amber gold push through — not as accent but as revelation, as though the canvas holds buried fire that the blue can no longer contain.

There is no horizon here, no edge, no anchor — only the infinite depth of a universe made entirely of light and its absence.

Unlike the figurative blue work elsewhere in Prajapati's practice, this canvas offers no central form to hold the eye. Instead the viewer is invited — or compelled — to move continuously across the surface, discovering new constellations of colour at every scale. From a distance the painting reads as pure atmosphere; approach it and it dissolves into a cosmos of individual marks, each one distinct, each one necessary.

The interplay of gold and blue carries rich art-historical resonance — from the golden grounds of Byzantine mosaics to the night skies of Van Gogh — yet Prajapati's work is answerable to none of these precedents. His gold does not illuminate from behind; it erupts from within, a mineral energy forcing its way through the cool weight of the blue field.

Deeply meditative in both its making and its viewing, this painting asks for stillness and rewards it generously. It is a work about the inner life of matter — the way light persists, the way darkness is never simply empty, the way attention transforms what it rests upon.

Dr Ram Bali Prajapati - Ghaziabad, India

Dr. Rambali Prajapati @rambali.prajapati , a recipient of the National Award, the President’s Award, and the Senior Fellowship Award from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, was born into a modest potter family in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh. His childhood was devoted to crafting idols and toys of gods and goddesses, a tradition deeply rooted in his family heritage. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in painting from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, and subsequently obtained a PhD in “Art and Art Market” from Chaudhary Charan Singh University. He has created a series of acclaimed paintings on themes such as Music, Human and Nature, and Udaan(‘Flight’). He has also produced popular sculptures on themes like books, schools, and “Life of Stairs.” For the past two years, he has been actively creating sculptures using mineral stones while residing at Kaladham in Greater Noida (Delhi NCR).

With a formal education in painting and a family heritage in clay toy and idol making, the artist’s journey has evolved into a passion for sculpture. After earning a doctorate in painting, his focus shifted to sculpting with semi-precious stones, including Jasper, Labradorite, and Amethyst. Over the past two years, they have collected over 200 mineral stones and developed innovative carving techniques. Their work now includes large-scale sculptures and installations that combine semi-precious stones, wood, and bronze, celebrating the natural beauty and vibrant colors of these materials.
