Painting Sculpture

I, Prasoon Chandra Poddar, born in 1983, I firmly believes that arts are a way of expression and every individual is capable of it. With this intention, I have worked with different individual and organisations, in the past, and has facilitated workshops and strengthens skills of people to use arts as a tool of expression. I am Bihar based artist, firmly believes in this ideology.

My work revolves around this ideology and also extends to different ways in which he engages with arts. I completed my Bachelors and Masters in Fine Arts from Jamia Milia Islamia University with painting specialization Through my work, I challenges the notion of ‘beauty’ and ‘waste’ and brings out multiple dimensions and ways in which individuals engage with public spaces. My work also captures human forms in relation to ‘imagination’ and ‘reality’.

My most acclaimed work around currency depicts the binary of ‘construction’ and ‘destruction’. And my latest series challenges the idea that an art is limited to canvas. In my recent work, i have experimented with different materials and challenged the artist in myself only, to bring out different layers so that each surface speaks its own reality. And I also see art in cooking so i love cooking and sharing with my friends (including birds and street dogs).

About the Artwork : Singularity is the biggest myth. There are different ways in which an image can be perceived, looked at, defined and described. And an art is one of the best ways of bringing out different perspectives.

Through my work, I try to capture different ways of looking at a thing and it reflects the polarity of a human vision. While the series ‘From that window’ captures how we see the earth’s surface from a distance, the other series zooms-in, close to the surface and captures how life unfolds itself in public spaces. Through my work, I also capture different binary concepts such as ‘beauty and ugliness’, ‘utility and waste’ and ‘construction and destruction’. The essence of my work is to bring together these binaries and often conflicting concepts and, in the process, challenge the vision and perspective of people around me and engage with them through my artwork.

When we see surface of the earth from a distance, we see a range of hues and structures that are neatly arranged and it all comes together to redefine ‘beauty’ for us. The series, ‘From that window’ uses scrap items that we often discard in our everyday life on the basis of their ‘utility’ and are brought together to capture our imagination and at the same time challenge our idea of ‘beauty’ and ‘ugliness’ and ‘utility’ and ‘waste’. It also brings out the view from the creator’s perspective. The other series, which range from, the ‘Indian currency’, ‘Silence wall’, ‘Environment terror’, ‘Closing eye’ and ‘Three idiots’, brings the focus of my vision and perspective towards the surface of the earth and closely investigate that, which appeared ‘beautiful’ from a distance. These different artworks explore our society and mirrors how individuals behave and engage with public spaces and public property. The series brings concepts such as ‘purity’, ‘pollution’, ‘faith’, ‘beliefs’, ‘action’ and ‘construction’, ‘destruction’ together and mirror the active role that humans play in destroying the ‘beauty’ of the society while engaging with it.

I firmly believe that arts are a strong medium to bring about a change. And through my paintings and artwork, I continuously try to put forth, these conflicting perspectives, notions around binary and unsettling images, to question our role in destroying nature and at the same time engage with the viewers and bring about a positive change.
